Con motivo de la celebración del Día Internacional del Libro, el pasado 29 de abril cientos de estudiantes de nivel básico y medio superior leyeron en voz alta el libro Las batallas en el desierto de José Emilio Pacheco en la explanada del jardín Juárez, a un costado de la biblioteca pública Elena Poniatowska. Durante el evento, organizado por el Instituto de Cultura, Recreación y Deporte y la Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara, se recordó la figura de Gabriel García Márquez, recientemente fallecido y de la última ganadora del Premio Cervantes.
